Grapevine Propagation. XVIII. Spring Chip-Budding of Mature Grapevines at High Level from February through April

Twelve-year-old vines of Thompson Seedless at the Kearney Horticultural Field Station (KHFS), Parlier were chip-budded to Chenin blanc at intervals starting 1 February through 4 May 1979 to compare successful take with control vines T-budded on 4 May 1979. The March chip-budding was more successful than T-budding.

Mature vines of Cardinal at Davis chip-budded to Chardonnay in March and April were compared to control vines that were T-budded in June. April chip-budded vines gave as successful a take as June T-budded vines. The take of March chip-budded vines was lower than the June T-budded or April chip-budded vines.

Slashing the trunks at the base of chip-budded vines to control bleeding did not improve the successful take.
