The API 50 CHL system was assayed to determine its accuracy in classifying some species of lactic acid bacteria isolated from musts and wines. The results show that this method is not appropriate for identification of Leuconostoc oenos strains isolated from wine of the Utiel-Requena area (Spain).

Key words: Leuconostoc oenos, identification system, lactic acid bacteria
