Clonal and Pruning Effects on Muscat à petite grains blanc Yield and Terpene Concentration

M. G. Mccarthy 1

1 Department of Agriculture, P.O. Box 245, Nuriootpa, S.A. 5355, Australia.

Significant differences in yield between 10 clones of Muscat à petite grains blanc were found when assessed over four harvest years. A Barossa Valley selection (73/10) was the highest yielding, and a California selection (I.S. 75.2221) the lowest due to significantly fewer bunches per vine. Spur-pruning increased the yield of four clones compared with cane pruning. Pruning method had no effect on the weight of annual prunings removed. There was no difference in the free volatile terpene concentration (FVT) between clones, but there were significant differences in potential volatile terpene concentration (PVT). PVT differences were not related to either fruit yield or maturity. Pruning method had no significant effect on PVT concentration.
