Abstract
Estimation of the per cent brightness of a red wine by use of the sum of the optical densities at 420 and 520 mµ will usually give values witin 1 to 3 per cent of the calculated value.
Estimation of the dominant wavelength to an accuracy of ± 3 mµ can be made from a plot of the ratio of the optical densities (420/520 mµ) versus dominant wavelength between 590 and 630 mµ.
Close color marches with a standard can be achieved only when the component wines of the blend have nearly the same dominant wavelengths. With wines of dissimiar dominant wavelengths adjustments must be made to a trial blend to attain a satisfactory color match.
