Abstract
The growth and chloride accumulation of 6 grapevine cultivars during 4 weeks were compared under glasshouse conditions in solution cultures containing 0, 50, 100 or 150 meq chloride per liter. The cultivars were 6 Vitis vinifera varieties: 'Sultana', 'Shiraz', 'Clare Riesling', 'Cabernet Sauvignon', 'Palomino', and 'Doradillo'. As chloride concentration in the nutrient solutions was increased, shoot-length increments and dry-matter accumulations were lower, and chloride concentration in the mid-shoot petioles greater, in all cultivars. Differences between cultivars were found in the chloride accumulated at the various treatment levels. From these differences it is suggested that when grown on their own roots, the degree of tolerance to high chloride was highest, for 'Cabernet Sauvignon', followed by 'Shiraz', 'Sultana', 'Clare Riesling', 'Palomino', and 'Doradillo', in that order.
