Abstract
The average age of wine in a single-barrel solera where p is the proportion of draw-off per period approaches a limiting value 1/p as the number of periods increases, and for a wine N years old to remain N years old, the proportion of draw-off must equal 1/N. These expressions are used to compare actual ages with those claimed for Madeiras offered for sale.
