Abstract
Petiole chloride concentration (% dry wt) of individual vines within single clones of the cultivars Italia and Mataro in a furrow-irrigated vineyard ranged between 0.87% and 1.71% for the former and 1.05% and 1.59% for the latter. Three vines from each cultivar (selected on the basis of high, intermediate, and low petiole chloride concentrations) were tested in a replicated glasshouse trial. There were no significant differences in chloride accumulation between vines within cultivars under conditions of uniform rootzone salinity, which provided further evidence for the need to test single vine selections for chloride exclusion under uniform conditions. Both vineyard and glasshouse data suggested that Italia vines are better chloride excluders than Mataro vines.
