Abstract
An equation similar to Beer's law which describes the interception of radiation by plant canopies was used to calculate the total leaf area of a vineyard canopy. True leaf areas were measured by a leaf area integrating meter and its correlation with the calculated area was determined. Both measurements were highly correlated and their relationship was suitably described by either one of the following regression equations: Am = -8635.79 + 1.21 (Ac) and Am = 0.11147 • (Ac)1.2045, where Am is the area measured with the integrating meter and Ac is the calculated area. The procedure to calculate the total leaf area proved to be simple and reliable.
