Abstract
Overall levels of mold and rot were found for three viticultural areas and 25 varieties of grapes. Both rain and time of harvest greatly affected the degree of mold and rot and insect infestation. Large differences were found between viticultural areas, grape varieties, vineyards in the same area and individual loads from the same vineyard. Viticultural practices directly affected the amount of mold and rot found and indirectly the degree of insect infestation. Loading and winery practices directly affect the degree of insect infestation. Insect infestation occurred mainly in the vineyards. There was little correlation between vineyard inspection and winery inspection of individual loads. Mold and rot was a poor index of insect infestation.
