Abstract
The planting history of the wine grape varieties in California is reviewed, showing the trends that have occurred and some of the reasons underlying them. The present wine variety situation demands fuller understanding by wine producers in order to intelligently plan for replacement of old acreage or the planting of new vineyards. The trial and acceptance of new hybrids will gain momentum in the immediate future.
