AB  - The concentration of soluble solids in grapes at harvest was compared with raisin quality as measured with an airstream grader calibrated to agree with visual grading standards of the USDA. The statistical relation between the solids (X) and raisin quality, as described by the maturity requirements for US grade B or better raisins, (Y), was Y=-339.25+37.3X-0.8097X2. The correlation coefficient, R=0.867, was highly significant. The percentage of raisins grading B or better improved markedly with slight increases in soluble solids, up to approximately 22° Bal. Harvest date and year had little effect on the influence of soluble solids.
