In the Chianti zone of the Pisan foothills, the grape variety affected most severely by berry drop is 'Ciliegiolo.' Prebloom sprays of (2-chloroethyl) trimethylammonium chloride (Chlormequat, CCC) at 100 to 1000 ppm markedly affected vegetative growth and fruiting behaviour in that cultivar. Concentrations between 500 and 1000 ppm were most effective for reducing shoot growth and internode length and for controlling berry drop, which resulted in 44% higher yields per vine. Sugar content of the must was significantly reduced by the treatments. No residual effect on vegetation and fruit was observed the year following treatment. ER -
