Effective in defoliating the grapevines was flaming followed by removal of the dried leaves with a stream of water. Flaming left no residue that could contaminate the berries. Most chemical treatments were unsuccessful, primarily because of damage to the clusters. The best chemical treatments were no better than flaming.
