On analysis of the sulfite waste liquor utilized as raw material in sulfite spirit production, it has been found that the higher straight-chain aldehydes, pentanal, hexanal, heptanal, and octanal, appear in the sulfite waste liquor in concentrations that are sufficiently large to explain the formation of the corresponding alcohols.
