Samples are prepared through the use of an intermediate anion ion exchange resin employed to separate the normally co-eluting compounds fructose and malic acid into two fractions. The ion exchange resin is pressure packed into a cartridge type resin bed holder which allowed sample application and elution of compounds by the application of pressure applied through an attached syringe. The cartridge system shorterns sample preparation time to less than 10 minutes per sample. Recoveries of all major compounds in model solutions, Colombard must and Chardonnay wine, were shown to be 91% or better typically better than 95%.
