There is a tendency for berry and cluster samples to be riper, especially early in the season, but this is offset by the greater variability of whole-vine samples. Our studies and most other recent studies reported indicate that single-berry sampling is as effective as other methods. Because of its simplicity and reliability, it appears to be an acceptable procedure for collecting maturity information. ER -
