Judging from the numbers and sizes of the chromosomes, the PFGE patterns of all of the wine yeasts tested were similar to that of a haploid strain, Saccharomyces cerevisiae YNN 295, whereas some significant differences were observed among the strains. Thirty-two strains showed chromosomal bands which were not found in YNN 295. All but one strain had at least one doublet band. Even when slight differences in mobility of some chromosomes were neglected, 51 different karyotypes were observed. Differences in karyotypes were also observed among the strains under the same designation. These facts indicated that PFGE would be useful and reliable for differentiation of wine yeast strains. ER -
