The leaves, shoots and overall appearance of SO4 and Teleki 5C were very similar, however they could be separated with several morphological features. Teleki 5C had bifid and trifid tendrils in approximately equal numbers, its young leaves and shoot tips were predominantly green, and its maturing shoots were minutely pubescent and longitudinally striped with red pigmentation. SO4 had trifid tendrils, bifid were rare, its shoot tips and young leaves had a bronze cast, and its maturing canes were glabrous and uniformly (not striped) red. Cambial scrapings from dormant canes produced reliable and consistent isozyme profiles with aspartate aminotransferase (AAT) which confirmed the ampelographic characterization of the two rootstocks.
