AB  - Reports of possible heath benefits of trans-resveratrol have prompted surveys of the concentration of this phytoestrogen in commercial wines. However, wines from eastern Canada and wines made from French hybrid grape varieties have not been investigated. Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography was used to analyze 15 Nova Scotia red wines: three produced from vinifera varieties and 12 from French hybrid varieties. Mean trans-resveratrol concentration was 1.080 mg/L (range 0.148 to 4.547). cis-Resveratrol, total piceid, total astringin, and total pallidol concentrations are also reported. Concentrations of trans-resveratrol and other stilbenes tended to be higher in wines made from French hybrids than from vinifera varieties.
