Abstract
The first generation hybrid of V. vinifera x V. rotundifolia (VR hybrids) has tolerance or immunity to some of the most important diseases and insects of the V. vinifera grape. By a second backcross of VR hybrids to several standard wine grapes, some fertile vines have been isolated that produce acceptable table wines. Many vines, however, are sterile or relatively unfruitful. Vines of the second backcross to V. vinifera have fruits that handle and process like those of V. vinifera. Some also retain a desirable berry-shedding characteristic that may be useful in mechanical harvest.
