Abstract
The standard and inverted type bud cuts gave equivalent bud take when bleeding was controlled.
The standard bud cut results in earlier bud push than the inverted bud cut.
The length of bud shield (long or short) below the bud has no effect on bud take or on earliness of bud push.
T-budding is a method for changing over varieties in a mature vineyard (1,2,3,4,5,6). Since the method has been described, other minor variations in bud cutting and insertion have been questioned, as well as their effect on expected take, such as: 1) the use of an inverted cut of the bud by starting below the bud and making the slanting cut above the bud (Fig. 1); and 2) the length of the bud shield below as well as above the bud (Fig. 2).
To obtain information on these two questions, two experiments were performed in 1978 to determine if there were differences in take or growth from the method as described in the original paper by Alley (1).
