Abstract
Perlette and Thompson Seedless vines were hand defoliated on August 1, just prior to harvest of the Perlette crop. Two other sets of Thompson Seedless vines were defoliated by hand and a chemical defoliant, Endothall, on September 13, four days prior to harvest. The total carbohydrate content on shoots of Thompson Seedless defoliated early was temporarily depleted. The depletion is attributed to the drain caused by the maturing crop. The reserves were partially replenished by the new leaves which emerged. Late defoliation had little influence on the carbohydrate reserves and did not induce new shoot growth.
