Pruning wounds can introduce fungal infection in grapevines, resulting in the development of perennial cankers on spurs and cordons which limit water and nutrient transport, leading to rapid decline and eventual death of the plant. The main image depicts a cordon with a lack of spring growth, a symptom characteristic of Botryosphaeria dieback. The inset photo of a trunk cross-section shows a perennial canker developing in the vascular system, caused by the Botryosphaeria dieback fungus Neofusicoccum parvum.
