  • Two SoilGrids screenshots compare soil profiles and mapped soil groups for Lanzarote and Tenerife; mean sand is higher on Lanzarote, whereas mean clay is higher on Tenerife. The composite contains two vertically arranged SoilGrids screenshots titled Mean Sand and Clay, 0 to 200 centimeters, with Lanzarote above Tenerife. Each screenshot has a physical-soil-properties panel on the left and a color-coded map labeled World Reference Base (2006) Soil Groups on the right, with a 10-kilometer scale bar. The profiles report values across six depth intervals: 0 to 5, 5 to 15, 15 to 30, 30 to 60, 60 to 100, and 100 to 200 centimeters. For Lanzarote, at coordinates minus 13.62536, 29.0740, bulk-density values are 143, 146, 150, 156, 158, and 158; clay-content values are 213, 222, 235, 270, 264, and 251 grams per kilogram; coarse-fragment values are 215, 210, 210, 243, 269, and 315 cubic centimeters per cubic decimeter; and sand values are 522, 518, 501, 480, 484, and 495 grams per kilogram. An overlay reports mean sand of 50.0 percent and mean clay of 24.2 percent. The Lanzarote map is predominantly pale yellow and light gray, with scattered maroon areas and an irregular white and dark region in the west-central part of the island. For Tenerife, at coordinates minus 16.3840, 28.5148, bulk-density values are 123, 126, 127, 137, 142, and 142; clay-content values are 294, 312, 356, 384, 369, and 359 grams per kilogram; coarse-fragment values are 181, 174, 177, 184, 202, and 220 cubic centimeters per cubic decimeter; and sand values are 356, 346, 323, 311, 317, and 329 grams per kilogram. Its overlay reports mean sand of 33.0 percent and mean clay of 34.6 percent. The Tenerife map contains broad yellow and pink areas with irregular light-gray, brown, maroon, white, and small blue patches. Overall, Lanzarote has the greater mean sand percentage, while Tenerife has the greater mean clay percentage.

    Figure 1

Composite image made from data from ISRIC SoilGrids showing Lanzarote versus Tenerife. These are point-based profile means rather than island-wide spatial averages and are simple averages across the six standard depth layers (0 to 5, 5 to 15, 15 to 30, 30 to 60, 60 to 100, 100 to 200 cm). As modeled predictions (250-m resolution), they may differ from local ground surveys. Profile values are shown on the left panels (units converted from g/kg to %). Currently, no general maps based on ground surveys exist beyond specific site data for the islands.
