Abstract
Spain has ninety wines authorized as belonging to the protected designation of origin. So, all the wines produced in the same designation of origin, will have very similar characteristics, and, in turn, these characteristics will be different to those found in wines produced in other geographical areas. The aim of this study is determining the preferences of a sample of consumers with regard to Spanish red wines from different designation of origin. We used ISO 5495:2009 to determine consumer preference in Spanish red wines with designation of origin. Our tests showed that there was no specific criterion for choice of one designation of origin over another, other than criteria based merely on marketing or historical tradition. The preferred designations of origin were those mainly located in northern Spain, as against other more southern ones. We did not find any links to other factors possibly affecting preference. To study the preferences of a sample of tasters considered representative of the Spanish consumer of this type of wine, and try to understand what are the criteria that make the consumer choose a wine or another. This question could be interesting for wine exports to Spain.
