Preprint Policy
The American Journal of Enology and Viticulture (AJEV) defines a “preprint” as any publicly shared version of an author’s own write-up of a manuscript that has not undergone peer review, nor had any other value added to it by AJEV (e.g., copy editing, formatting, technical enhancements); generally, this is a draft of a manuscript before submission to AJEV or the version that is submitted to AJEV. AJEV will consider for review any article that has been shared publicly without peer review, including any article posted to a preprint server. Sharing of a preprint is not considered prior publication. Authors must retain copyright in their work when posting to a preprint server.
Any preprints must be disclosed in the submission cover letter and in the initial submission questionnaire. Citing preprints as references in articles submitted to AJEV is prohibited. If the manuscript is accepted for publication in AJEV, authors may update the preprint with the accepted version of the manuscript, but not with the final published version of the article. AJEV will assign a unique Digital Object Identifier (DOI) to any accepted manuscript, irrespective of whether a preprint has already been assigned a different DOI. The corresponding preprint must be updated to include a direct link to the final published article on AJEVonline.org, using the following statement: “Now published in American Journal of Enology and Viticulture DOI: [insert DOI here]”.
AI Software Policy
AJEV permits the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) software tools (a.k.a. large language models) to assist in article writing. However, such use must be explicitly disclosed in the submission cover letter and in the Acknowledgments section. As with any other information source, directly copying and pasting AI-generated text is prohibited. Authors must review and revise all AI-generated text and be aware that AI tools are prone to creating fake literature references. Detection of fake references together with failure to acknowledge AI tools, if used, will result in rejection of the article. Please refer to the COPE position statement on AI and authorship for more details.
