The March chip-budding was more successful than T-budding.Mature vines of Cardinal at Davis chip-budded to Chardonnay in March and April were compared to control vines that were T-budded in June. April chip-budded vines gave as successful a take as June T-budded vines. The take of March chip-budded vines was lower than the June T-budded or April chip-budded vines.Slashing the trunks at the base of chip-budded vines to control bleeding did not improve the successful take.
