A “most common” genotype, identically fingerprinted, could be assessed comprising 17 (25.7%) of the Pinot clones tested. The largest group of 48 clones (68.6%) was analyzed within the range of 99% genetic similarity compared with the main identical group. A group of 24 clones could be situated farther than 1% differentiation: among 99.1 to 94.0% genetic similarity. No phenotype-specific marker for cluster architecture could be identified within the range of the chosen markers, nor could a common geographical origin be determined for the clones under study. It appears that Pinot noir displays both intra- and interclonal variation.
