Using 47 SSR markers, we showed that Mantonico bianco is the complementary genitor, with Garganega (syn. Grecanico dorato), of Catarratto, currently the main autochthonous white wine grapevine of Sicily and one of the most widely cultivated varieties in Italy. We discovered a first-degree relationship between Mantonico bianco and Guardavalle, a widespread, primary autochthonous white wine grape of the Calabria region. SSR data also shed light on the identity of the Mantonico/Montonico cultivars and revealed the wide spread of one, Montonico bianco, in central and southern Italy. ER -
